We agree with Mark Twain: formal schooling at any level can only provide so much. You learn skills, but not how to manage them. You learn what to think, but not how. You gain knowledge, but not experience. At UP, we believe knowing HOW is just as important as knowing WHAT and so we are building experiential learning to help connect your skills to your purpose. 

Much of the “HOW” falls under the category of Emotional Intelligence. This is because knowing how, requires certain emotional qualities such as self-awareness, empathy, listening, and storytelling. 
These qualities may sound “soft” and “new-agey” but turns out they are critical to our productivity,
our creativity, and our purpose. In fact, when two strong leaders are compared side-by-side, research shows that the difference in technical skills matters least. The real determinant in what makes someone “successful” is their emotional intelligence. At UP, we believe under the right approach, anyone can develop their emotional intelligence.

Our formats are designed to give members the tools, process, and insights needed to achieve their personal and professional potential.

Over the course of this year we will be beta testing several different learning formats for delivering valuable skills that our members can use to find and further their purpose. We’re not talking abstract theoretical concepts but real tangible knowledge for translating good ideas into action. (How->) We believe in what we call the “Mr. Miyagi” style of learning in which members learn by doing sometimes without even knowing it until the class is complete.

We plan to launch a number our short and long-form courses in 2016.

And while we expect to create much of the content ourselves, we will also partner with leading institutions and organizations from around NYC who excel at teaching the kinds of skills our members require. For example…
